Looking for Peace -

Posted Apr 3, 2009 View »

For the past few months I've been trying regularly get on my bike and spin at home. While the weather for the most part has been co-operative outside, it's actually my schedule that keeps me from time on the bike. Like most, the commute to the office and back, kids schedule etc... leaves very little time for the road, so I like to spin at home when I can.

The challenge after all that is staying motivated. Keeping the intention long enough to to get home, go through the "how's your day" all 'round, take a few shots on the Dude, search for my kit, load up a workout on my ipod (with Richard or Sprinverals), towel, find a  water bottle (Duder took it soccer and lost it -  again)...change, get out the bike, set up the trainer and then spin  - it just sucks up all the will power...and adds too much time...

Well upon proper reflection, looking for efficiency,  it turns out that not spinning isn't my fault at all. It is my wife's. She is the number reason I don't spin as often as I should. She's to tidy. She's keeps putting everything away on me. I set it up ...she puts it away...I set it up...she puts it away....sapping my motivation with every tidy little move (albeit fragile).

There is enough to overcome just to keep myself motivated, at least I don't have to train myself, with a library of great workouts to load on the ipod, at least that is covered. It turns out that I really can't overcome all the "tidy-ness", it drives me nuts...

So with all the subtly of a sledge hammer I explained my position to the family; that I actually live in the house too, with privileges not based on actual time spent there... and I  have at least some rights to use space in it...which by my definition means not having to dig my bike out from the recesses to use it.

It worked - I had to compromise, which was actually a small win. If I keep the bike out the way of Dude's hockey set up and out of direct eyeshot of the family downstairs when I'm done...I'm allowed to keep the bike out.  I've picked a spot that I should be able to get set up and put away, with promises that it won't be tidied away too deeply for me to retrieve in a reasonable time.

I have no idea how long it will last, but I have at least some spinning peace for now. I think I'm motivated, I think I am, I think I am....
